Recycling programs are employed extensively throughout The Irvine Ranch.
- Green waste is recycled as mulch. Future residential areas are being utilized today for mulch operations that take green clippings left from trimming and pruning, process them into mulch and re-use the mulch in landscaped areas.
- “E-cycling” programs are in place across the Irvine Company portfolio. In 2008 alone, Irvine Company Office Properties recycled 761 tons of paper and 58 tons of electronic waste. This equates to 13,000 trees, 60,000 gallons of oil, 2,300 cubic yards of landfill space, 45,000 pounds of pollution, and more than five million gallons of water.
- Eco-friendly products are used by all divisions, including recycled paper in all restrooms and biodegradable cleaning supplies that are environmentally safe. In addition, chemical dilution stations that eliminate packaging and use micro-fiber mops are used, saving 900,000 gallons of water and preventing 62,000 plastic bottles from entering landfills.
- Irvine Company Retail Properties diverts more than 620 tons of trash and debris annually from local landfills. In addition, the Storm Drain Filter Inserts program diverts 14 tons of trash and debris annually from reaching the ocean, while an additional 365 pounds of usable material have been separated and recycled.
